September 20th, 2007

Carbon Poker, the online gambling site, has awarded its first Caribbean Stud jackpot. The player, Yvetje, won $20,318.75 on a 20c jackpot bet placed on 2 September, 2007. Yvetje, a female player from Limburg, Belgium has been with Carbon Poker since 2005 and can be played here:

“Caribbean Stud is one of the latest additions to our software, and to have the top prize go off really shows you that anyone can have huge win,” said Shane Bridges, Carbon Poker’s Media Manager. “We introduced jackpots to add the excitement of huge instant wins to our poker experience, and what could be more exciting than a player taking down the entire jackpot so quickly.”
As Yvetje played the $1 minimum Caribbean Stud table, she placed her $1 ante followed by her jackpot bet of 20 cents when a dream hand of a spades royal flush landed. As the dealers hand failed to qualify, she was just paid 1 to 1 on her ante, but her 20-cent jackpot bet paid out a $20318.75 jackpot win.
“Knowing this jackpot went to a player that’s been with us for such a long time, and loves playing all forms of poker with us, really makes this a special win,” Bridges added. “But at the same time, anyone can take down a jackpot, you don’t need to be the next poker star to win big at our Caribbean Stud tables, Yvetje has proved that.”
Carbon Poker offers a huge range of poker games, from the traditional favourites like Hold’em, Omaha, and Stud, through to the specialty games like Badugi and of course Caribbean Stud.

US Online Casino Bill Gains New Friends in Congress

July 23rd, 2007

In America, support for House of Representatives (HR) Bill 2046, also known as the Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act (IGREA) 2007, has grown this week with five more Congressman voicing their support and agreeing to sponsor the legislation.
IGREA was introduced in April by Massachusetts Democrat Barney Frank, also Chairman of the influential House Financial Services Committee, and would license and regulate online gambling in the United States. Online poker and gambling companies licensed under Frank’s bill would be exempt from the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which was passed in October.

The latest to add their support include New York Democrat Anthony Weiner and Mississippi Democrat Bennie Thompson, both members of the US House of Representatives. There is also House Representatives Steven Rothman from New Jersey and Michael Honda from California alongside Maryland Representative Albert Russell Wynn.

Earlier, California Democrats Howard L Berman and Bob Filner voiced their support alongside James McGovern, a Democrat from Frank’s home state. The addition of the latest Representatives grows the current list of co-sponsors to 32, up from the Bill’s original eleven when Frank first introduced the Act to the House.

Frank’s aides have repeatedly stated that interested parties calling their political representatives with expressions of support for Frank’s Bill were having a positive effect in encouraging politicians to re-examine the implications of UIGEA.

The Bill needs a total vote of 218 in order to be passed on to the Senate for ratification and, currently, Frank’s Democrat Party controls 53 percent of the House’s 435 seats.

Phil Hellmuth Hurt In Racecar Crash; WSOP Performance In Jeopardy

July 13th, 2007

July 9, 2007 (PRWEB) – The poker world is holding its breath today after a freak accident on the Las Vegas strip in which poker legend Phil Hellmuth lost control of his high-speed racecar.

Hellmuth had spent the day testing the 200 mph racecar in the Nevada desert. Upon approaching his hotel, the 11-time WSOP bracelet winner lost control of the vehicle and crashed head-on into a pole.

While the racecar was totaled, witnesses report that Hellmuth was conscious as he left the vehicle unscathed but visibly shaken. According to one onlooker, Hellmuth quipped, “Well, you can’t win every race.”

With the Main Event of the World Series just hours away, it’s still unknown whether the UltimateBet.net pro will recover in time to vie for the Main Event title and a 12th WSOP bracelet.

“I’d be amazed if he was able to play poker today after such a high-speed collision,” stated eyewitness Brian Balsburgh of Poker Royalty. “He had severe whiplash.”

Hellmuth’s Main Event start time was scheduled for 12pm on Monday, July 9th. While friends are no doubt praying for a quick recovery, foes are likely relishing in his misfortune. After all, Hellmuth’s absence from the floor at the Rio Hotel & Casino definitely makes the playing field a lot less fierce.

US Internet Gambling Reform Bill In Danger

July 4th, 2007

A proposed Congressional Bill designed to reform online gambling in the United States could be in danger of becoming reality due to supplementary legislation that promises a billion-dollar bonus for affordable housing.
Massachusetts Democrat Barney Frank introduced HB-2046, the Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act, in April and Congressional hearings on the feasibility of the Bill were held in June.

It seeks to reverse the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) that Congress passed in October to ban Internet gambling in the United States by prohibiting American banks and credit card companies from processing payments to and from online gambling sites.

Frank’s Bill would create a framework for the Government to legalize, license, regulate and tax Internet gambling while also installing safeguards to prevent underage and compulsive gambling as well as money laundering and fraud.

Frank, a member of the US House of Representatives and Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, has recently been an advocate for stopping home foreclosures, which are at an all-time high in America, and a clause recently added to his planned legislation would see one billion dollars placed into a fund to build affordable housing.

The money would be partially funded by profits from the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (FHLMC) and the Federal National Mortgage Association (FNMA) and would go directly to local communities in order to construct 1.5 million homes over the next decade. These bodies are Government-sponsored but privately-owned enterprises endorsed by the Government to authorize loans and loan guarantees.

Hearings on the proposed legislation are scheduled to begin on July 12 with many Republicans in Congress stating that they will vote down the proposal. Although Democrats now outnumber Republicans in the lawmaking body, a situation that was not the case when UIGEA was passed, this additional legislation has angered many in Frank’s own party and made the prospect of the Bill passing increasingly doubtful.
