Casino Slot Debate Heats Up

November 2nd, 2007 No comments »

Well, it seems our friends at the Maryland Casino have their hands full with the same issues on gambling as every other State out there!  Is the addition of legalized gambling going to be good for the community or is it going to be it’s demise?

This is a question that many Legislators have had to ask themselves and now those residing in Maryland find themselves with the same question.  It’s really heating up for both parties and continued to do so on Friday as two seperate rallies were put together to relay their side of the story and their opinions on the issues at hand.

Governor Martin O’Malley is looking to amend the states constitution through a bill that would allow up to 15,000 slot machines, which would be spread over five locations in the state.  The constitution is defininately being put to the test these days, and this is yet another.

Opponents of the bill, such as Comptroller Peter Franchot feel the slots will bring a negative image to the state, he had this to say, referring to back in 1949 when slots were legal, “The results were disastrous, corruption and crime, broken families, ruined communities, destruction of things that we care about.”

Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller took a different approach when speaking at a rally for slot supporters saying, “Over 200 years ago, George Washington came to this city to race his horses, to bet on the horses, the president of the United States, folks.”

He went on to say, “It’s been a part of our history, part of our culture for a long time.”

The Legislature began deliberating on the issue on Friday and a decision could be made soon as to whether the voters will get to decide the issue.

The Poker Players Alliance has united and is set to bring their battle to Washington as they plan on convincing legislators that the game of Poker is one of skill, and not luck.

Professional poker players Chris Moneymaker and Annie Duke will be some of the people on hand when the group travels to Washington. The main focus will be on creating an image of a game of skill, but any information the group brings will help in the efforts to change last years ill advised Internet gaming bill.

The PPA is receiving press of all kinds as of late, just yesterday the USA Today did an extensive article detailing all of the good that the PPA has done, as well as explaining the points of view of the group.

The AP has also done reporting on their actions, as well as Market Watch, and other mainstream media publications, as the PPA has become the premier organization and voice for poker players who are fed up with the U.S. laws.

Al D’Amato, former United States Senator and current PPA chairman, will also be attending the groups visit to Washington, and he says the goals of the trip are very clear, “We want to demonstrate to the public, to the members of Congress, that this is a game of skill.”

The PPA is hoping that its representatives, which are a small sample of the 809,000 members, will convince legislators that changes need to be made to a bill that is currently affecting millions of poker players in the U.S.

Great article!  Hopefully something is done to reverse the ridiculous laws that have punished so many casino and poker lovers around the globe and in the USA!

Online casino; PartyGaming.com up for sale?

October 12th, 2007 No comments »

Big news hit the blogs and the news postings of many poker portals and websites over the possible sale of the strongest gambling website brand out there!

Mitch Gerber, CEO of PartyGaming told press that his massive online gambling company, whose online casino arsenal includes online poker, online bingo and sports betting, would like to hear sale pitches from the major Las Vegas groups.

PartyGaming has a built up a market cap of $2.5 billion since been founded in 1997 and has gone from strength to strength by creating their own brands such as PartyPoker, PartyBets, PartyCasino and PartyBingo.

Before the ‘Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was passed in 1996, 75% of PartyGaming’s revenue came from the US market. Pulling out from American caused share prices to crash by 60% and the only option was to build up the brands in Europe which has been a success.

888.com, PartyGaming’s rivals, have been rumoured to be potential buyers but in an interview with the CEO, Gerber mentioned that he would like to hear from the major players in Las Vegas – like the Bellagio, MGM and Harrahs.

Hopefully, if a major casino was to invest in an online gambling site, it would make politicians reconsider the UIGEA and it’ll allow U.S casinos direct access into Europe.

If you’re interested in gambling online and you reside in the US or other countries, visit these casino sites that offer both International and American currency, slots or poker games!

Online Casino to Air UK TV Ad.

October 5th, 2007 No comments »

The online casino and gambling giant, Ladbrokes, will be the first company to take advantage of the relaxed laws regarding the advertisement of gambling companies in the UK. Ladbrokes plc. operates online casino, betting and online poker sites, will air its first TV ad during the half time break of the Manchester United versus Roma Champions League match.

The Gambling Act of 2005 which became effective on September 1, online casinos and gambling companies may now advertise in the UK, if they can satisfy a number of strict criteria such as the location where their license is held, the protection of children and social responsibility.

In addition to all that the advertisements will also have to comply with certain rules. Examples of this are, they can not use sexual innuendos, like models in bikinis. And players will receive money when they deposit money at an online gambling site, also the fact that players can gamble and win money.

The advert will focus on the betting side of their online gambling business, featuring veteran television presenter and former soccer professional Jimmy Hill and ex-soccer stars Alistair ‘Ally’ McCoist (Glasgow Rangers), Ian Wright (Arsenal) and Lee Dixon (Arsenal).

The new advertising campaign will be targeted at casual gamblers between the ages of 18 to 34, as this is the market that occasionally bets on the outcome of soccer matches. It would seem, then, that Ladbrokes is spending its money here rather than on its more traditional punters who bet on horses and visit betting shops. The £5 million campaign, running with the tag line “Everyone’s got an opinion, what’s yours worth?”

Betfair also debuted their TV advertising campaign late on Tuesday night, in a more low key affair during the Champion’s League football highlights. Other companies such as William Hill are expected to follow with their own adverts soon.

Online gambling site awards jackpot.

September 20th, 2007 No comments »

Carbon Poker, the online gambling site, has awarded its first Caribbean Stud jackpot. The player, Yvetje, won $20,318.75 on a 20c jackpot bet placed on 2 September, 2007. Yvetje, a female player from Limburg, Belgium has been with Carbon Poker since 2005 and can be played here:

CarbonPoker.com

“Caribbean Stud is one of the latest additions to our software, and to have the top prize go off really shows you that anyone can have huge win,” said Shane Bridges, Carbon Poker’s Media Manager. “We introduced jackpots to add the excitement of huge instant wins to our poker experience, and what could be more exciting than a player taking down the entire jackpot so quickly.”
As Yvetje played the $1 minimum Caribbean Stud table, she placed her $1 ante followed by her jackpot bet of 20 cents when a dream hand of a spades royal flush landed. As the dealers hand failed to qualify, she was just paid 1 to 1 on her ante, but her 20-cent jackpot bet paid out a $20318.75 jackpot win.
“Knowing this jackpot went to a player that’s been with us for such a long time, and loves playing all forms of poker with us, really makes this a special win,” Bridges added. “But at the same time, anyone can take down a jackpot, you don’t need to be the next poker star to win big at our Caribbean Stud tables, Yvetje has proved that.”
Carbon Poker offers a huge range of poker games, from the traditional favourites like Hold’em, Omaha, and Stud, through to the specialty games like Badugi and of course Caribbean Stud.

Phil Hellmuth Hurt In Racecar Crash; WSOP Performance In Jeopardy

July 13th, 2007 No comments »

July 9, 2007 (PRWEB) – The poker world is holding its breath today after a freak accident on the Las Vegas strip in which poker legend Phil Hellmuth lost control of his high-speed racecar.

Hellmuth had spent the day testing the 200 mph racecar in the Nevada desert. Upon approaching his hotel, the 11-time WSOP bracelet winner lost control of the vehicle and crashed head-on into a pole.

While the racecar was totaled, witnesses report that Hellmuth was conscious as he left the vehicle unscathed but visibly shaken. According to one onlooker, Hellmuth quipped, “Well, you can’t win every race.”

With the Main Event of the World Series just hours away, it’s still unknown whether the UltimateBet.net pro will recover in time to vie for the Main Event title and a 12th WSOP bracelet.

“I’d be amazed if he was able to play poker today after such a high-speed collision,” stated eyewitness Brian Balsburgh of Poker Royalty. “He had severe whiplash.”

Hellmuth’s Main Event start time was scheduled for 12pm on Monday, July 9th. While friends are no doubt praying for a quick recovery, foes are likely relishing in his misfortune. After all, Hellmuth’s absence from the floor at the Rio Hotel & Casino definitely makes the playing field a lot less fierce.
