How To Play Blackjack – The Basics

blackjackBlackjack – a game of chance in which a player tries to beat the dealer to be the closest to 21 without going over – is one of, if not THE, most popular casino gambling games in the entire world.

It’s a fun, fast-paced and often cerebral form of gambling that tens of millions of people enjoy around the globe on a daily basis.

It’s easy to learn and a blast to play with a group of people, but it’s a game that many professional gamblers take very seriously and, though it takes only minutes to establish the rules, it can take years to master.

A typical blackjack gambling table involves at least one player (though some casinos allow up to eight players at a table) and a dealer. Two cards are dealt to each player face-up, as well as one card to the dealer face-down and the other face-up. The object of the game is for the player to be dealt the number of cards needed to score 21 without going over…while at the same time scoring higher than the dealer.

Each numbered card is worth it’s denoted value, while all face cards (Jack, Queen, King) are worth ten points and an Ace, depending on how the player wants to use it, can be worth 11 or 1 points. A perfect hand – a Blackjack – consists of the player or dealer receiving a 10 or a face card plus an Ace in their first two dealt cards. This hand pays at better odds than a standard win and is unbeatable; it can only be tied by the dealer.

A typical hand of blackjack gambling might play out something like this: Player #1 and Player #2 “Ante”, meaning they place a bet standard to the table rules. The Dealer deals Player #1 a 10, deals Player #2 a King, and deals himself a card face-down.

He then deals Player #1 a 9 (giving him 19 total), deals Player #2 a 3 (giving him 13 total), and deals himself an 8. The standard rule in Blackjack gambling is that the Player should always assume that the Dealer holds a 10 or face card as his face-down card.

With that in mind, Player #1 decides to “Stay”, to not take any more cards. But Player #2, with only 13 total points, knows that he is likely behind the dealer, so he “Hits” to take another card. His card comes as a Queen, adding 10 to his 13, giving him 23 total. This is over 21 so he “Busts” and loses his bet.

The Dealer then turns over his face-down card; it’s a 9, giving the Dealer a total of 17. In almost all casinos the Dealer must “Stay” on 17, so Player #1 wins and is paid 1:1 on his initial bet.

There are many smaller, more complex, more intricate rules to blackjack gambling and even more betting strategies to boot.

Good instincts, card-counting and knowing your position at the table will all contribute to better results in the game, but even without them, blackjack gambling still has some of the best odds of any casino game, often offering the House less than a 1% advantage over the player. This helps make blackjack an easy, fun game to play.
